Recognition and Prevention of Knee Ligament Injury

Definition of Disease

The knee ligaments are located around knee joint, together with the muscle tissue, they maintain the stability of the knee joint (stability maintenance) to match the normal movement of the joint. The knee ligaments are tough fiber connective issue, composed of collagen fiber and elasticity fiber. Ligaments attached around and inside the joint. Knee ligaments injury means over stretching, tearing even complete fracturing of ligaments. Knee ligaments injury caused knee joint loose or unstable. When the joint is directly hit, cut or sprained, and the ligaments are stretched beyond its tolerance, ligaments injury will occur, which can generally be divided into acute injury and chronic strain.

According to the degree of damage, it is divided into the following types:

Ⅰdegree: Some of ligament fibers rupture, with parts of pain, no joint instability.

Ⅱ degree: More of ligament fibers rupture, with mild or moderate joint instability.

Ⅲ degree: Complete ligament rupture, with significant joint instability.

Symptoms

Joint Pain

The pain degree depends on the injury degree of the ligaments and surrounded structures and the patient pain threshold. When the injury is mild and the ligament is partially ruptured, the pain is generally mild. If the injury is severe and the ligament is completely ruptured, the pain would be severe with other symptoms generated.

Bleeding and Swelling

Ligament rupture is often accompanied by injuries to the ligament itself and the surrounded joint capsule and bleeding and causes joint swelling. When the amount of bleeding is heavy or the subcutaneous tissue is thin, the subcutaneous congestion and bruises would be visible.

Dyskinesia and Function Impairment

Ligaments Injury often causes joint dyskinesia. Due to the spasm of the surrounded muscles or the high tension of the joint capsule, the joint can be in a compulsive position so that the patient would fear to move the injured joint.

Tearing sound

Sometimes the patient can hear the tearing sound of the ligament.

Acute Treatment

Most cases can be handled under the RICE principle.
R: Rest. Braking the injured joint.
I: Ice. Immediately ice compress the swelling till it goes down.; within 24 to 72 hours, the compress can eliminate swelling and relieve pain, the compress should last 10-20 minutes each time and repeat every 1~2 hours.
C: Compression. The elastic bandage can be used for compression bandaging to reduce swelling; plaster and brace can be used to protect the joint.
E: Elevation. Elevating the injured joint higher than the heart position can help to reduce swelling.

General treatment

For Ⅰdegree injury, symptomatic control measures such as analgesics and ice compresses are used.

For Ⅱ~Ⅲ degree injury, it needs braking the injured joint, the braking time varies depending on the location and extent of the injury, and need to gradually start the rehabilitation exercise under the guidance of the rehabilitation therapist. Surgical treatment is recommended for those who severely damaged, high requirements of joint function and stability, and high requirements of sport degree.

Whether it is acute phase management or general treatment, braces play a vital role in recovery of knee ligament injured. Choosing and using correct braces can help knee ligament recover faster and better. Simple Medical has a product “Dual Upright Knee Brace H1” which has a very good effect on the postoperative recovery.
